The SUMO Guide to Resilient Leadership in Uncertain Times

Overview

In uncertain, challenging and everchanging times, what can we do to lead ourselves and others well? Professor Paul McGee’s insightful, inspiring and practical session draws upon positive psychology, neuroscience and experience gained working with over 1,000 organisations across 41 countries. His goal is simple, to equip us to be our best in order to give of our best. In doing so, not only are we able to handle our own stress and pressure, but we are better placed to help our colleagues, our customers and also our families.

Introduction:

  • This session will help Reinforce, Remind, Reveal key ideas on how to enhance our effectiveness as leaders
  • Circle of influence, circle of concern
  • Why a leader has to be both a thermostat and a thermometer

Session One:

The ‘R’ factor in leadership

  • E + R = O   Event + Response = Outcome
    • There’s something amazing inside you – your brain, learn how it works and how to manage it more effectively. This section will draw upon the work of Daniel Kahneman ‘Thinking Fast and Slow’ and will provide an in depth explanation as to how our fast brain can both help and hurt us in uncertain times and why our slow brain can help us avoid making stupid decisions and in turn become more resourceful and less reactive.

Session Two:

What hinders our ability to be more resilient?

  • We will explore the impact of fatigue
    • Reflection rejection – our failure to analyse and assess our actions and decisions
    • High emotional involvement

The 7 keys to building our resilience and improving our relationships with others

  1. The importance of sleep/rest – what the latest science has to say about the importance of rest to boost our resilience
  2. Taking control and ownership of your day – the importance of planning and prioritising your daily routines whether working from home or in an office

Session Three:

  1. The power of self talk and how to move from Faulty Thinking to Fruity Thinking
  2. Manage your mental diet. Exploring how our ‘consumption affects our production’ in terms of our behaviour and performance
  3. Being active. We perform at our best when we understand the importance of activity and exercise
  4. Connection is crucial. Why humans need humans to function effectively and how to develop greater connection with others
  5. Don’t forget your beachball. This visual metaphor will enable us to engage and motivate those around us through the power of perspective and asking effective questions

The seminar will end with a brief summary and also emphasise why everyone is MAD, Making A Difference.
